dydan: (LJ abuse)
I thought long and hard overnight about my move to DW. When I told Jared last night about the creepy staff stalking incident along with the staff trolling going on he was astounded.

Before we went to bed, I changed my browser's home page to DW. That was...HUGE for me as LJ has been my default home page for YEARS now.

I'm a little sad that some of my beloved LJ friends wont be migrating. I understand not everyone is going to care or have the issue I have with all of this. And truthfully, since the bulk of my posting is under an F-lock, I am minimally affected by the whole LiveTwitFace issue. But the stalking? The harassment? Deleting comments? That's just not something I am willing to endorse with my hard-earned dollars and the site traffic my blog draws in. And while I am well-aware that my little blog pales in comparison to the traffic the more "famous" LJ'ers bring, I still feel that my defection will add to the growing numbers of other loyal users who have left for safer harbor.

Dreamwidth is far from perfect. They are still relatively young and are right now a small pond. And that's ok. I remember when LJ was a small pond and right now I feel like I've been foolishly holding on to that fond memory in the hopes that the Russian Mafia at SUP would return LJ to those glory days. They wont. They simply dont care. And that's fine...it is a business after all and they are free to run it or mismanage it however they want to.

Doesnt mean I have to stay there and be a party to that. And I wont.

Guess I'll be hosting and/or participating in a few Friending Frenzies! But at least here in DW I wont be stalked/harassed by the staff.

I won't be leaving LJ completely because I own/help to manage too many communities, but I'm going to seriously consider starting up the ones I own over here.

Certainly I'll not be posting my more sensitive entries to LJ any more; largely because my sister has suddenly decided to reciprocate and add me to her friends list after five years of my having my current LJ name (she always said she didn't need to add me back since her LJ is public, and so this is a little suspect).

i followed the link

Hi there :) I can't remember if I added you early on, so I just did so again. Let me know if anything is wonky, ok?
BTW, love to you and Jared, and feel free to pimp me as a friending frenzy! *G*

I went through and deleted some stuff I wouldn't necessarily want left behind on an abandoned account. I'm not planning to delete and will probably still read the people who are only over there but...hello, Dreamwidth, I plan to stay!

I don't know if I'll post over here...I don't have a clue how it works. LOL I'm kinda a dumbass sometimes. ;o)
But I'm glad you feel safer over here. :o)

no worries. I have a permanent account here, and have for five years or so. So I have never given the russian LJ any of my money.

I have a permanent account here, so I am not going anywhere. Not sure what I will do with my DW account...maybe as a different kind of blog.

I'm staying here. I long ago gave up any illusion of privacy if I post things on the internet. Nothing is private. Some things are LESS public, but nothing is private. If LJ blows up, that will be the end of my time here - but I cannot believe another site will make any difference.

nods i sort of understand. but i know truth be told it isnt a matter of any place you go, every single place is exactly the same on privacy issues. its the internet.

so i am not 'moving' anywhere else to begin again knowing the the exact problems here is there and everywhere else.

tis the 'net'... it isnt private, never will be.

I totally understand what you are saying about privacy and I agree. The bigger issue for me is the Staff abuse going on. That is completely uncalled for.

Date: 2010-09-12 06:05 pm (UTC)From: [identity profile] wndrdr.livejournal.com
i know what you are saying, but.. it doesnt matter where you are.. what site you are.. ALL staff at a certain level is going to have access to all your posts/comments.. period.. finido.. i know this for a fact due to my being an admin at a place..

i promise you.. at permission levels all staff have access regardless of who you use. period.

and i dont care how good you are as head boss deciding who is what and hired et et, you will always eventually get a nasty apple in every bunch..

it is going to happen eventually to any site worth being at.. because if its worth being there its gonna get big.. and ou need more staff.. and its normal.. by numbers... the higher they go.. the more likely that bad apple will shine for a bit

and since it isnt really happenign site wide.. to everyone i am making the normal assumption its getting nipped... which is as it should be.

most sites also have rules of 'when issues happen, do not make a bigger issue of it, keep your mouth and fingers silent"

its general across the board as it is.

so i expect issues, i accept they will happen.. i dont like them, i think it sucks

and it sucks because it tells you more about the human race then i like to admit.

but there ya go.

I get that its a business. And LJ is certainly free to operate their business in whatever way they think will net them the fattest wallet.

That doesnt mean I have to sit back and passively allow them to stalk locked entries and gleefully brag about doing so, or to harass people who criticize what they feel is a bad decision about how their own content is distributed. Yes all sites have issues and a good site will deal with transgressions their staff makes. But in the cases I am most angry about? NOTHING has been done. And nothing will be done. For me, THAT is a far bigger issue than the whole LiveTwitFace issue is.

I worked for a lot of years in the restaurant industry when I was younger. And sure, there were plenty of times the staff would gather in the back and bitch/make fun of the difficult customers we didnt like. But we'd never, EVER do that to their face. And that is exactly what is happening right now in LJ. There is a right way and a wrong way for staff to present themselves in front of their customers. The fact that right now there are staff members openly harassing users and stalking them with creepy messages? That is the WRONG way to behave and LJ has done nothing to rein those people in.

At my job, I have access to thousands of people's medical information as well as their personal information. Sure, there's the potential that I could steal a few social security numbers or blab about who just got diagnosed with AIDS. The fact that I (and anyone who works in the medical field) can do those things doesnt make it ok to say "Oh well...that's how the medical field works. What can you do?" What I can do is take my business to a place where the staff have more self-control and ethical boundaries.

This guy has a great analogy about the privacy issue (http://news.livejournal.com/129284.html?thread=89617156#t89617156)

I'm not so naive to think that my locked entries arent seen by people not of my choosing. Yes, this IS the Internets. But I refuse to patronize a business that allows its staff to gleefully engage in behavior akin to that of a pack of wild dogs.

Nods and its your choice to leave, keep in mind the problems here will follow you. period. it just is as it is. not gonna change.

the dreamwidth site was started by and is still owned by the ones who began lj, and when it grows to a certain size they will not be making money again, like with origional lj and they too will sell it.

this is just again, how things are.

thats why i wont leave lj. lj is everywhere, it is the same as most, fb and twitter and otehrs have worse problems.. but i am at fb.. hyperchat we wont get into :P its even worse then lj..

lj will eventually make opt out tool and othr things, theres gonna be months of screaming, whining, chhildish tantrums. then things will be added et et, then in a yr or so something else will happen.

least here you KNOW whats happening, most other sites hush it up so you arent aware until its to late.

so since i know its not just lj, and similar to the same issues are all over in every journal/diary/blab your secrets behind closed posts.. then moving to the same old same old isnt gonna happen for me.

me? i am just happy to not live in china :P

anyways, this is the last post ill make on this subject, cuz i AM involved as admin in other places and i DO know most of the ins and outs and facts.. and i know that no matter what i know as fact, no one else will believe it cuz they dont want to.

and after a while its really up to the individual. and i believe that any security in your mind, be it false or not.. is better then none at all.

so i tell everyone, its the net. its all there. it isnt gonna get better. as you get pple playing more.. learning more and some sickos knowing to much on hacking and doing wrong things in other ways.. it will be worse.

so go where you wanna go.

just go with the facts. thats all. understand it wont get better. the net is more dangerous today.. then it was five yrs ago.

edit.. i dont know if dw is still owned by origional owners/devs of ljers *rolls eyes*.. just started by

also keep in mind, if you like there are online sites where you can rent bandwidth/space for small prices... like 50 a month for 1TB and you can dl lj system and run it yourself on your own virtual pc space.. and charge prices for it a month even cheaper then lj charges.. and run your own journal site. anyone can do it who is willing to rent the virtual space online.. for under 50 bux.. and if you charge everyone even 1 bux a month you just need 50 ppl to cover your price..

its common and how most places get started using free codes like lj

i honestly dont know if i will move,as the only reason i have a LJ account is to read your's and a few other friends lj...

Date: 2010-09-14 12:44 am (UTC)From: [identity profile] julifox.livejournal.com
I will not be moving. I looked over there and the main page looks an awful lot like LJ to me. Why should I pay someone twice as much for the same stuff I have here? If all my friends head over there, or if LJ should implode, or both, I will just discontinue my journal and not have one anymore. It's not like I post a whole heck of a lot out here anyway. I'm mostly out on FB lately.

Date: 2010-09-14 12:56 am (UTC)From: [identity profile] dydan.livejournal.com
Honestly?

I would rather pay DW extra money than to stay here where its acceptable for Staff to go in my private entries, change my settings around and leave creepy stalker-ish messages for me. Or where Staff can troll around on the news board and leave rude, harassing comments to anyone who dares question what they are doing with the site I pay to use...and then delete said comments when they get sloppy and get caught.

YMMV and all that...but I for one will not stay here and condone that behavior with my site traffic. As soon as Jared gets my "housekeeping" done moving the CSS code to DW for my layout, I'm outta here.

Date: 2010-09-14 01:05 am (UTC)From: [identity profile] julifox.livejournal.com
Well, honestly, I have not had any issues with anyone stalking me or moving things around in my journal or deleting entries or comments. So I can't speak to that. But if they should start, as I said, I will just delete my account in its entirety and stop blogging out here.

Date: 2010-09-14 01:15 pm (UTC)From: [identity profile] dydan.livejournal.com
I have not had the issues specifically either. But the fact that LJ staff does that AND its allowed/condoned just really squicks me out. Nobody should have to endure that, PERIOD.

I refuse to patronize an organization that allows their staff to treat customers like that with no consequences.
